Super Size

So I was walking down the street today and I saw an ad for a greasy spoon establishment in NYC. I mean this joint had all kinds of fried chicken and french fries and yuk yuk. It got me to thinking about the foods we eat and the quantities thereof. Before I started losing weight and watching my portion sizes (which admittedly I can use some improvement), I felt that if I didn’t have the triple cheeseburger with pickles, lettuce, onions, extra bacon, MAYONNAISE, ketchup and the super size fries that exceed well over 200 fries per cup then I was going to be hungry in 2 hours of me gorging myself with high blood pressure and blood clots waiting to happen.

I also went to McDonald’s today to get a medium iced coffee with French Vanilla. Woo wee! I saw this chick put in almost a half a glass full of liquid sugar. I got that coffee, sucked down a fourth of it and threw the rest away. WAY too much sugar. So what am I saying here? One of the first ways you can lose weight without even being on a diet is to control that SUPER SIZE thing us Americans have going. Do you know there are folks out here in this world that WISH they could eat a pickle let alone a 3 pound hamburger that it’s going to take 4 days to digest? Remember folks, portion control. You don’t have to have a super size in order to be full. Food for thought!

From the beginning…

So I was chatting with one of my girlfriends about health, fitness and how sometimes we don’t have time for any of it. As she was having her conversation with me, she brought up some family members and how they had…..well I can’t say it any less graphic –FAT KIDS! Folks this has a root and it starts from the beginning.

I will talk about me. I was never a fat kid. In fact, I was GORGEOUS!! :-) But I was chubby. I distinctly remember going  to the fifth grade in the summer of 1981 and all the kids were getting on a scale at the day camp I attended. They were 65 pounds and I was  pushing 80. And I was active. I belonged to Chicago State Gymnastics for 6 years. When I was in high school I was a cheerleader and I again was very active. But I ate like crazy. All the wrong foods and by the time the summer of 1989 came around and I was entering my first year of college, I stopped activity and ate and drank like it was disco (going out of style!). And I began to gain weight. And more weight. And MORE weight. To be honest, I’ve gained 100  pounds since 1989. Now that I’ve changed the way I value my health, it pains me to  see overweight children. Folks, I can’t tell you what to  do with your children but when you see them larger than what they should be at their current age, you have to make a determination to turn that situation around because when  a child is overweight they didn’t get like that by themselves. There is a parent that  is not doing anything about it or doesn’t know how. Attached is a link on information regarding overweight children. I hope this helps and remember it starts from the  beginning. Until next time. Take care of yourselves and your children.

Airplane seats

Hello folks,

I’m going to continue from the last blog sort of like a conversation that I just picked up from.

So about these airplane seats. I have to admit, I think they are of the devil! Seats are way too small for the average bear! Hell, I think if you are a size 10 it’s too small. Perhaps if you wear a size three then maybe you can sit comfortably in the seat with one leg crossing the other. As for the rest of us, seats need to get wider. OR MAYBE I NEED TO LOSE SOME MORE DAMN WEIGHT! HOW ABOUT THAT?!!??!?

When I went to Chicago for Labor Day, I rode on Delta Airlines. Let me just be the first to admit when the flight attendants come by and look to see if you are fastened and securely locked, I’d fake it. I used to make it look like I had the seatbelt on as I purched it under my gut. Since I’ve lost the 32 plus pounds since last November, I can fit not only the seat more comfortably but I can fasten the belt across my hips. I had to make sure that I didn’t have something to previously drink and imagined the whole thing. It was really ME. And if memory serves me correctly, I paid for my airfare on cheaptickets.com so I KNOW they didn’t sit me in the first class section or put a plane on the runway with wider seats. Therefore the moral of this story is weight loss has more advantages than one can imagine. The little things always seem to mean more and in this case, I can fit an airplane seat. Comfortably!! Till next time :-)

Friday’s eats

I just had the best salad EVER! Oh my God! Telaya will be the first one to tell you that I am more than a fan when it comes to Ranch salad dressing. I think I’ve purchased stock in Hidden Valley. I will not have a salad without it. But since I went to the doctor today and although I’ve not been told to stop working out, I do have to slow down my intensity. So that means that I can always eat much healthier. Therefore I went to Cafe Village 38 and had one of those salad that they make for you. I had them put in mixed greens, kidney beans, avocado, red onions, green peppers, cheddar cheese, carrots, broccoli and smoked chicken without the skin. Also, some salt and pepper and my dressing of choice…………………OLIVE OIL! And it was GREAT!! Oh my God. I’m in here licking the plastic bowl and my supervisor just told me that I need to be diagnosed for crazy. But it’s sooooooooooooooooooooooooo good and HEALTHY. This was a tip for those of you that gots to have ranch. Try an alternative dressing and imparticularly, one without transfat and high in calories. Smooches

Labor Day Weekend

Hey folks,

Sorry it’s been a few days since I’ve blogged. Is that a word? :)

Anyway, so I went home this past Labor Day (Chicago) and I had the greatest time. Saw my brother, godmommy and friends. And let me just say that as far as the weight loss journey, let’s just say that while in Chicago I forgot I had one. I mean I KNOW outside of my own bad decisions, I blame the city of Chicago for all my weight gain. (I say that lightheartedly with all humor) because Chicago has some of the best food in the universe. Pizza, chicken, pizza puffs, polish sausages, popcorn, cookies, Lawd have mercy let me stop.

I didn’t have the opportunity to work out and I didn’t want to eat right. So the best thing about eating  like I just spent several hours in Central Booking is to go right back to what made me lose weight in the first place. WORKING OUT and EATING RIGHT! So today I had vegetables, beans, fruit and Grape Nuts. Trust me, Grape Nuts has all kinds of fiber and it takes 13 minutes per chew. Whew!

I also went to the gym today but I have this heel spur and I left my asthma inhaler at home. That’s enough to make me want to quit and go home right? Umm, nope! I lifted weights. When you have a heel spur, that does nothing to inspire jumping up and down. So I had to push my way through the pain and still get in a good work out. So I guess today’s blog is about pushing you’re way through whatever makes you want to give up on exercise.  But I have to tell you, 8 chicken wings from Harold’s (a Chicago favorite), pizza and all that good stuff AFTER you’ve managed to  lose weight will get you back in the gym for fear of gaining it back. So if you had a hard weekend with all the eats you can stand, happy trails back to exercise. Smooches
